Braided bread

Ingredients
1 cup milk
4 tablespoon butter
1/4 cup water
1 tablespoon active dry yeast
3 and 3/4 cup whole wheat or unbleached flour
1 teaspoon salt

Directions

  • Combine milk and butter in a bowl. Heat in the microwave until the butter is melted. Stir in water and yeast. Allow the mixture to set for 15 minutes.
  • In a large mixing bowl, combine flour and salt. Pour the yeast mixture into the flour. Combine and knead until it is a smooth dough. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and allow the dough to rise for 2 hours.
  • Split the dough into three equal parts. Roll each third of the dough into a long rope. Lay them out parallel. Combine the three tops at one end. Cross one of the outer ropes to the middle. Repeat with the other side and continue in order to form the braid. When you reach the end, combine the ends together. Wrap the ends beneath the bread.
  • Place on a baking sheet and bake at 375F for 30-45 minutes.
